For Football & Non-Football reasons, Marcus Rashford has been the talk of the country for a few months. He’s single handedly supported the Nation, encouraging many restaurants to offer free school meals to children and ensure that nobody goes hungry.
Some fans were advising Marcus Rashford to stick to football & focus on improving as a footballer. However, after last nights antics against RB Leipzig, there won’t be many critics.
Rashford didn’t start against Leipzig, which raised a few eyebrows. In addition to that, Bruno Fernandes was also left on the bench. Did Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not fancy this match?
Marcus Rashford finished his warming up procedure and entered the field just after the 60th minute. With Man Utd already 1-0 in the lead, thanks to a Mason Greenwood goal… Marcus simply had the task of keeping the pressure on. He did that, alright.
It took just 11 minutes for Marcus Rashford to score his first goal. It was a goal which had considerable controversy around it, as it was judged offside by the assistant referee. Upon a VAR check, it was found that Marcus Rashford was inside his own half, which nullifies the offside rule.
After a brilliant pass by Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford still had to run 40 yards and beat the goalkeeper. He played to the whistle, although some of the RB Leipzig defenders didn’t. Rashford slotted the ball past Gulacsi, then waited patiently for the VAR Review. Goal given.
Just four minutes later, it appeared that the legs of RB Leipzig were trembling. The defensive prowess that we’ve been raving about in Dayot Upamecano, Angelino & Konate never really surfaced. They were certainly having a poor game. A failed attempt at playing out from the back gifted the ball to Marcus Rashford, who smashed the ball into the back of the net. This was an important goal, as it all but ended any chance of a comeback.
However, Man Utd weren’t finished there. After an impressive win against PSG in the opening round, they wanted to capitalise and put themselves in the best position possible. Afterall, with PSG, RB Leipzig & Man Utd in the same group… goal difference could prove vital.
8 Minutes later, Anthony Martial was closing in on goal when he was hacked at by Marcel Sabitzer. The penalty was awarded and it would appear that the scene was set. Marcus Rashford could complete his hat-trick, by slotting the penalty. What happened next, would send shockwaves through world football.
The England star showed elite generosity, by handing the ball to Anthony Martial. He would give up his chance of getting the match ball, in order to help the French forward get his first goal of the season. There’s no greater display of a solid team mentality. Martial hasn’t had the best start, failing to score & also having received a suspension in the Premier League.
Karma would play it’s part before full-time, with a chance opening up for Marcus in stoppage time. He netted once more, completing his hat-trick which he kindly sacrificed minutes earlier. It was 5-0 to Man Utd, in a match which everyone thought they’d be lucky to come out of, with a single point.
Interestingly, Marcus Rashford’s hat trick means that he’s the second Man Utd player to score a hat-trick after being introduced as a substitute. The other? His current manager!
If Marcus keeps things up, it will be Sir Marcus Rashford MBE before long! What a magnificent player he’s becoming… and it’s important to remember that he’s just 22 years old.
