Liverpool have reportedly ramped up their interest in RB Leipzig talisman Dayot Upamecano. The centre back has been tipped for a big transfer since his dominating performances in the UEFA Champions League last season, but a transfer didn’t materialise during the short summer break.
Liverpool are a well run club, opting to sell their fringe players & putting this money towards their future targets. However, the injury to Virgil Van Dijk will be causing some panic at Anfield, meaning Liverpool have to change their strategy.
Virgil will be missing for a minimum of 5-6 months, which is the bulk of the season. If you consider the time it may tke for full sharpness, you can write off the 2020/21 campaign entirely.
The problem that Liverpool are faced with next is squad depth. Only Joel Matip & Joe Gomez are available to play in centre back, although Fabinho is capable of covering the position too.
Liverpool will already be looking towards the January transfer window, knowing they have to bolster their defensive setup. Dayot Upamecano is the man who can provide cover for Virgil Van Dijk, but also has the potential to match him on the pitch.
What’s really interesting in the Upamecano transfer story is that he recently signed a contract extension in the summer, which contained a release clause of £36.5 million. This is extremely cheap for a player of his calibre.
This release clause isn’t active right away, but it does become active in the Summer of 2021. Liverpool will struggle to wait that long, so we might see them offer a higher transfer fee, to secure his services earlier.
If Liverpool wait until the summer, every club will be interested in dayot upamecano.
RB Leipzig are under no illusion, they will lose their talisman. They’ve anticipated this though, already recruiting a backup for Dayot. They’ve signed an 18 year old Croatian, Josko Gvardiol.
Dayot Upamecano Scout Report
Here’s our scouting report on Dayot Upamecano, who’s one of the best central defensive prospects in football at the moment.
Dayot would walk into any team in world football, which makes his £36.5 million release clause seem like a complete bargain. He has Champions League experience and showed the natural talent he has during the 2019/20 campaign.
His key traits are his strength, passing ability and acceleration. His skills are everything that you’d hope from your centre back in the modern game. Now, defenders are expected to be confident on the ball, starting the play from deep as if they’re a central midfielder.
Upamecano is a fantastic ball player, often roaming into midfield with surging runs. He’s an exciting talent that is going to be sought after next summer, or earlier.
His international career hasn’t kicked off just yet, but in his 2 appearances in the Nations League he has managed to score a goal. The French squad has quite a lot of competition, with Raphael Varane, Clement Lenglet, Presnel Kimpembe, Lucas Hernandez & Benjamin Pavard all vying for places.
He’s going to be a huge talent, we think there’s a great chance he ends up at Liverpool, but there are lots of clubs interested.
