Frank Lampard has taken his Summer transfer spend to just over £200 million, but there are already rumours that he’s ready to offload some fringe players to make more signings. It’s widely reported that he’s looking for £50 million for January, and we are going to take a look at the players that he could offload.
We aren’t sure yet exactly what player he wants, but we are inclined to believe he could be looking for a centre back. With a £50 million budget, there’s a lot of quality on the market. Players such as Milan Skriniar, Dayot Upamecano & Jonathan Tah would all be achievable in this budget, although Upamecano’s release clause isn’t active until the summer.
The biggest hit that Chelsea are going to take is with Kepa Arrizabalaga, who they paid £72 million for in 2018. He’s made his fair share of mistakes at Stamford Bridge, which means there won’t be many clubs willing to take the risk with him. At this point, they’d be pretty lucky to get £20-25 million for the goalkeeper.
Chelsea have already replaced Kepa, signing Edouard Mendy for just shy of £20 million. In addition to this, they have also re-registered Petr Cech as an emergency backup goalkeeper, although he’s technically retired!
This shows that there really isn’t much faith in Kepa regaining his spot in goal & Lampard has already admitted that Mendy is the Chelsea #1.
Another player which could be on the way out is Emerson Palmieri. He was heavily linked with a Summer exit, to Inter Milan… but there were no formal offers. He’s recently stated that he’s unhappy with life playing for Chelsea, and is frustrated that he plays for Italy regularly, but is overlooked by Lampard.
Talking out against your manager rarely does any favours for your selection, and Emerson would’ve been sold in the Summer had a transfer offer materialised.
He’s not playing regular football for Chelsea, which means that finding a new club will be more difficult. Less clubs are willing to take the risk with him, but Chelsea should still be able to get around £15 million for the left-back. Again, this is a small loss on the £18 million they paid Roma, back in 2018.
It’s got to be said, Frank Lampard has a problem with his left-backs. Although he recruited Ben Chilwell & he’s hit the ground running, Marcos Alonso is another player which is rumoured to leave Chelsea.
Alonso has been a chelsea regular since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, he’s been a fan favourite during points of his career. Fans loved him as a left wing-back, as he often contributed in attack.
However, things came to blows in the 3-3 draw against WBA between Marcos Alonso and Frank Lampard. It seems that their relationship has fully broken down. Lampard singled out Alonso at Half time, substituting him. He was at fault for two of the three goals that had been scored before the break.
Although things have turned sour, Marcos Alonso still has enough quality to provide cover for Ben Chilwell. If Chelsea are planning to sell both Emerson & Alonso, they need to consider that there will be no cover for the left back slot.
Cesar Azpilicueta could provide cover for the left back slot, but he’s the right back cover for Reece James.
At 29 years old, Marcos Alonso is past his peak, so he won’t command a huge transfer fee. Transfermarkt has him valued at £16 million, but he may well depart on loan.
We’ve earmarked three outgoings for Chelsea, which should see just over £50 million added to their budget. However, they will require a backup left back if they get rid of Emerson & Marcos Alonso… so we don’t think this budget will allow them a star centre back, like we first anticipated.
