In a year which has been dominated by takeover discussions for the Magpies, they have managed to make what could be described as one of the signings of the summer. At 28 years old, this Callum Wilson Scout Report isn’t a youth report, but an outline of what he can provide Newcastle.
Newcastle fans will be hoping that Wilson can recapture his terrific form of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign, where he scored 14 goals and assisted 10 times. He managed this in 30 appearances, which is a great output for a relegation candidate in Bournemouth. Such form earnt him a potential transfer to Man Utd, as they were heavily linked with both Callum & their ex-youth Josh King.
However, the 2019/20 campaign didn’t really get started for either Wilson or Bournemouth, where they were relegated. Wilson only managed to score 8 goals, in 35 appearances. He would’ve hoped for more, but the whole team failed to perform & he ultimately had less chances.
We are now in thr 2020/21 campaign for the Premier League, with Newcastle taking a low-risk £20 million punt. He arrives with Premier League experience & will no doubt be excited at the prospect of linking up with Saint-Maximim & Almiron. If the trio hit the ground running, there’s no reason why Callum Wilson shouldn’t replicate his form of earlier years.
He’s started pretty well too, with an average of a contribution in every game so far. Broken down, that’s 4 goals and 1 assist. His most noticeable game so far would’ve been the 3-1 win against Burnley, where he scored twice and assisted once.
Callum Wilson should have a great campaign, and is definitely worth his £20 million price tag. He provides an immediate upgrade on Joelinton, and he also helps take the pressure away from him. Joelinton arrived with huge potential, but alongside that came huge pressure to succeed.
